Jehovah Shalom: The Lord is Peace
Jehovah Shalom is introduced in the book of Judges, during a period of great distress and fear for the Israelites. Gideon, who would become one of Israel’s judges, encounters the angel of the Lord, and his immediate reaction is one of fear, believing that he would die because he had seen the angel of the Lord face to face. However, God reassures him with peace and says, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die” (Judges 6:22-24). This encounter leads Gideon to build an altar to the Lord and name it Jehovah Shalom, acknowledging God as his peace during chaos.
God as Refuge and Strength
Psalm 46 further expands on the theme of God as a source of peace and security. It begins with a powerful declaration: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1-11). The psalmist describes a world in upheaval, where even if the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, there is no need to fear because God is an unshakeable refuge and provides peace that endures amidst the chaos.
Perfect Peace in Steadfast Trust
Isaiah 26:3 promises perfect peace to those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in God. This peace is not a fleeting emotion but a lasting state of being, rooted in unwavering trust in the divine (Isaiah 26:3). It’s a peace that comes from a deep-seated confidence in God’s sovereignty and goodness.
Peace Beyond Understanding
In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of peace as part of his farewell discourse to his disciples. He says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27). This peace is a part of the legacy that Jesus leaves for his followers, a peace that is not contingent on worldly circumstances but is a gift from Christ himself.
The peace of God, as reflected in the name of Jehovah Shalom, is a profound truth that offers comfort and assurance. It is a peace that surpasses all understanding, a peace that is available to all who put their trust in God. Also, It is a reminder that no matter what we face in life, God is with us, and in Him, we can find perfect peace.
Heavenly Father, Jehovah Shalom,
Let us pray:
We come before You seeking the peace that only You can provide.
In a world filled with turmoil and fear,
Be our refuge and strength, our steadfast hope.
Grant us the peace that endures through all trials,
The peace that calms our troubled hearts and minds.
May we trust in You completely,
And experience the perfect peace promised in Your Word.
In the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, we pray. Amen.
